A new Sustainable Mobility Plan for Prague and its suburbs
Since 2015 Prague has been creating the first Sustainable Mobility Plan (SUMP) for Prague and its suburbs. The Sustainable Mobility Plan is being developed for Prague and its metropolitan region which embraces Prague´s neighboring areas in Central Bohemia. The plan´s objective is to define a medium term conceptual and strategic solution for the traffic system until 2030 which fulfills the principles of sustainable mobility, derived from European documents. The Sustainable Mobility Plan will replace the current principles of the traffic policy approved in 1996 and will set up a close strategic cooperation from Prague with the Central Bohemian region.
The working process on the Sustainable Mobility Plan is led by an external project manager who coordinates the collaboration of city organizations and companies. The working group consists of representatives from IPR Prague, Prague Municipality, Prague Integrated Transport Organizer, Technical Administration of Roads of the City of Prague, Prague Public Transit Company and representatives of Central-Bohemian region with Central Bohemian Integrated Transport Organizer.
The preparation for the analytical part of the Sustainable Mobility Plan for Prague and its suburbs (analysis of the current situation) started in the beginning of 2016 and was approved by the City Council in February 2017. It is comprised of over 400 pages and several annexes. All in all the development of the plan lasted more than 2,5 years.
In March 2017 the second phase of the project scenario preparation (defining a vision and setting objectives) was discussed with stakeholders in a workshop. Further on the common mobility vision Transport Policy was formulated during March and May and approved in September 2017. According to the new Transport Policy, Prague should focus on public transport, especially rail public transport and its connection to other transport modes – pedestrians, bikes and passenger cars in entire metropolitan region. Cars should be used more sustainably in the city.
The final stage of proposal (measures proposals) began in June 2017, with brainstorming on measures and stakeholder consultations. Upon finishing the SEA process, the final document should be submitted in September 2018 for approval by the Council and Assembly of Prague. In the further preparation of the Sustainable Mobility Plan, several other stakeholder workshops and panel discussions with the public are planned.
